RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Arkansas Tech’s Johnie Davis and Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Whitney Coffey have been named the Great American Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week for their performances in the second week of the 2011-12 season.
MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Arkansas Tech senior guard Johnie Davis has been named the GAC Men’s Basketball Player of the Week after leading the 24th-ranked Wonder Boys to a 2-0 week. The Canton, Ohio native totaled 48 points throughout the week, averaging 24 points per game while shooting 59 percent from the field (17-of-29). He was also successful behind the three-point arc, nailing 10-of-17 treys. Davis’ best performance of the week was a personal best, a 33-point output in an 87-64 road win over Mid-America Christian. He was 12-of-19 from the field in that win, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. In ATU’s season-opening 117-58 win over Central Baptist at home, Davis tied the game-high in only 16 minutes of action with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting from the field. Davis also collected seven steals throughout the week.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Southeastern Oklahoma State senior forward Whitney Coffey has been named the GAC Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the second straight week to open the 2011-12 season after leading the Savage Storm to a 2-0 week, including an 85-82 win over Texas A&M-Commerce and a 71-69 win over St. Mary’s. The Princeton, Texas native combined for 37 points in both games, averaging 18.5 points per outing. Coffey made 12-of-17 shots from the field throughout theweek for a 70 percent shooting clip. Coffey’s best performance came in the win over St. Mary’s, in which she made 6-of-8 shots from the field and 7-of-11 from the free-throw line for a total of 21 points. She also had 11 rebounds in that win for her first double-double of the season. Earlier in the week, she collected 16 points in the win over TAMU-Commerce.
