RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Henderson State’s Melvin Haynes and Arkansas Monticello’s Jordan Goforth received the Great American Conference’s Men’s and Women’s Basketball Players of the Week honors for their performances over the opening weekend of the 2013-14 regular season.
GAC MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Melvin Haynes, Henderson State, G, Sr., Akron, Ohio
Haynes averaged 22.5 points. 3.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists as the Reddies won a pair of games at the Southwest Baptist Classic. In the opener, against the host, he scored 21 points on 5-of-10 shooting with five rebounds and six assists. On Saturday, against Lincoln, he scored 24 points, 21 in the second half, and connected on four 3-point field goals.
GAC WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jordan Goforth, Arkansas-Monticello, G, So., Plano, Texas
Goforth scored 28 points in the Cotton Blossoms’ 84-74 season-opening victory against Lindenwood (Mo.). She added six rebounds and three assists in the victory. She connected on all 10 of her shots in the second half, a half in which UAM shot 87.0 percent (20-of-23) to turn a seven-point halftime deficit into the 10-point win.
