RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The 2013 Great American Conference Men’s and Women’s Golf Championships will begin Sunday morning with the Hot Springs Country Club again serving as the host course.
Both of the 2012 GAC Individual Medalists - Henderson State’s Matt Jennings and Arkansas Tech’s Rebecka Surtevall – will attempt to repeat as champions. The two each enter the GAC Championships off of strong finishes. Jennings led the Reddies to back-to-back team victories with top-seven individuals finishes. Surtevall has played even better as she finished first at both the Missouri Western Candlewood Suites Classic and the First Federal Invitational.
The 2012 GAC team champions, Southwestern Oklahoma State and Harding, have enjoyed strong seasons and enter the GAC Championship in primed positions to make another run at the titles. SWOSU leads four GAC teams ranked in the latest NCAA Division II Central Region rankings, placing No. 2 behind Central Oklahoma. Arkansas Tech ranks sixth in the rankings, followed by Southeastern Oklahoma State in seventh and Harding in eighth.
Harding’s women won their second team title earlier this week when they captured the Natural State Golf Classic. Dating back to the Lady Bisons’ final fall event, they have finished first or second in five straight events. They head to Hot Springs ranking sixth in the most recent NCAA Division II Central Region rankings. Southwestern Oklahoma State rates as the top team in GAC as the Lady Bulldogs placed third with the Golden Suns in fifth. Henderson State checked in at eighth in the region.
Play begins Sunday at 8 a.m. with the Arkansas-Monticello and Northwestern Oklahoma State teeing off first on the men’s side. In the women’s tournament, Southern Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist will lead off the championship.
