ATU MAINTAINS LEAD AT MEN’S GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Arkansas Tech finished the second round of the 2013 Great American Conference Men’s Golf Championship with the same seven-shot lead over Southwestern Oklahoma State it held following day one. East Central posted a record-setting round to make a major move up the leaderboard and into third place at the Hot Springs Country Club.
 
For the second-straight day, Graham Rucker and Brian Belz led the way for the Wonder Boys. Rucker shot a 1-under-par 71 for the second straight day to post a 2-under 142 total. Belz shot an even-par round to finish Monday tied with Rucker for the individual lead. The team shot a 5-over 293 total, a three-shot improvement from Sunday.
 
Southwestern Oklahoma State matched Arkansas Tech with a second-round team score of 5-over 293. Tommy Sterling carded the low round of the day for the Bulldogs with a 1-under 71 to move up from a tie for 20th into a tie for seventh. Vincent Stong and Wouter MyBurgh shot matching 73’s to join Sterling in the top seven.
 
East Central began Tuesday in last place amongst the nine GAC teams eligible for the team title. By the end of the round, the Tigers passed six teams with a record-setting round of 1-under 287. Dakota Robbins moved up from a tie for 11th into solo third place by carding a 4-under 68 - the lowest individual round carded in the brief history of the GAC Men’s Golf Championship. Through 36 holes, he leads the field with 10 birdies. Travis Arnold improved by 10 shots by carding a 1-under 71 to move into a tie for 15th.
 
Harding and Henderson State remained in fourth and fifth place. Southeastern Oklahoma State improved by five shots to move up one position to sixth. Arkansas-Monticello dropped back to seventh place. Southern Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist rounded out the nine eligible GAC teams.
 
Among the individuals from Southern Nazarene and Northwestern Oklahoma State, the Crimson Storm’s Blake Jackson remains the low man after he registered his second-straight even-par round. He enters the final round in fourth place, two strokes behind Rucker and Belz.
 
Final-round play begins Tuesday at 8 a.m. with Ouachita Baptist and Northwestern Oklahoma State teeing off first.
