GAC SOFTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (4/8/2014)

 RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Southeastern Oklahoma State’s Haley Strawn and Southern Nazarene’s Kayla Wyatt captured the Great American Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Weeks honor for the 10th week of the 2014 season, the conference office announced on Tuesday.
 
GAC SOFTBALL CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Haley Strawn, Southeastern Oklahoma State, SS, Jr., Moore, Okla.
Strawn led the Savage Storm to a three-game sweep of Arkansas-Monticello as she hit .727 by collecting eight hits in 11 at bats. In the series opener, she went 4-for-4 with an RBI in the 5-0 win. In Saturday’s doubleheader, she went 4-for-7 with four runs scored and three RBI.
 
GAC SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Kayla Wyatt, Southern Nazarene, RHP, So., Purcell, Okla.
Wyatt recorded a pair of double-digit strikeout performances as the Crimson Storm took three of four from Ouachita Baptist. She struck out a career-high 12 in the series opener while giving up one run in a six-inning complete game.  In Saturday’s first game, she struck out 10 and did not walk a batter in a 5-3 win. For the week, she totaled 28 strikeouts against only four walks.
 
NOTABLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES                                                                    
  • Tyler Casada, C, So., Northwestern Oklahoma State (Batted .500 by going 9-for-18 with a home run and six RBI)
  • Courtney Derrick, OF, Fr., Harding (Collected nine hits and hit .563 in the Lady Bisons’ sweep of SWOSU)
  • Maddie Dow, DP, Fr., Southern Arkansas (Drove in six runs against East Central; hit safely in all four games)
  • Whitney Linder, LF, Jr., Southern Nazarene (Totaled four extra-base hits out in going 5-for-14 against Ouachita Baptist)
 
NOTABLE PITCHER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES                                                                  
  • Kellie Mason, RHP, Sr., Northwestern Oklahoma State (Recorded a 16:1 strikeout-walk ratio in earning two victories)
  • Mindy McElroy, RHP, Sr., Southeastern Oklahoma State (Allowed only two runs spanning 14.1 IP; went 2-0 with a shutout)
  • Shelby Miller, RHP, Fr., Southern Arkansas (Earned a win and a save against East Central; struck out 13 in 14.1 IP of work)
  • Brianna Nunley, RHP, Jr., East Central (Threw a pair of complete games vs SAU and recorded third shutout of the season)
  • Amber Rollins, RHP, Jr., Harding (Picked up two victories and a save as Harding swept Southwestern Oklahoma State)
