GAC BASKETBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (1/19/15)

 RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Great American Conference announced the league’s Players of the Week for the 10th week of the 2014-15 basketball season. Harding’s Andraz Kavas and Ouachita Baptist’s Colt Fason shared the men’s award and Arkansas Tech’s Fatima Adams and Henderson State’s Aungelique Sledge split the women’s honor.
 
GAC CO-MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Andraz Kavas, Harding, F, Jr., Ljubljana, Slovenia
Kavas led Harding in scoring in victories against East Central and Southern Nazarene. Kavas extended his double-figure scoring streak to eight consecutive contests. Against the Tigers, the hit 8-of-10 shots in scoring 21 points. Two days later, he went for 23 points. He averaged 8.0 rebounds in the two wins and hit 5-of-10 from the 3-point arc.
 
GAC CO-MEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Colt Fason, Ouachita Baptist, F, Sr., Conway, Arkansas
Fason became the third player in GAC history to reach the 1,000-point milestone, and did so in style - a fast-break slam dunk against Southeastern Oklahoma State. He averaged 20 points in wins against Southern Nazarene and Southeastern to help keep the Tigers atop the GAC standings. He made 17-of-29 shots and grabbed 6.5 rebounds per game.
 
GAC CO-WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Fatima Adams, Arkansas Tech, F, Jr., Bryan, Texas
Adams put together monster performances against Southeastern Oklahoma State and East Central. Against the Savage Storm, she scored 22 points on 10-of-17 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds. Against ECU, she scored 26 points, including the tying points for force overtime. Her 22 rebounds came within two the top performance in Division II this season.
 
GAC CO-WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Aungelique Sledge, Henderson State, G, Sr., West Helena, Arkansas
Sledge recorded a double-double in the Reddies’ 85-73 win against Southwestern Oklahoma State. She scored 35 points - one shy of her career high - and she grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. She posted just the fifth 30-15 double-double in GAC history. In addition, she dished out a career-best five assists and registered four steals.

  • Alre’k Brown, Sr., F, Southern Arkansas (Scored 23 points and grabbed 13 rebounds vs NWOSU for his fifth double-double)
  • Mike Balogun, Sr., G, Arkansas Tech (Scored 20 points against Southeastern and followed with 23 against East Central)
  • Martell Collins, Jr., F, Southwestern Oklahoma State (Averaged 21.5 points and 14.5 rebounds; leads GAC with 9.6 RPG)
  • Danny Powell, So., F, Southeastern Oklahoma State (Averaged 19.5 PPG; shot 52.2 FG Pct and 58.3 3-point FG Pct)
  • Stirling Thomas, Jr., G, ECU (Scored 35 with a career-high 8 3-pointers vs HU; Scored six of final eight points to rally vs ATU)

NOTABLE WOMEN’S NOMINEES
  • Jordan Goforth, Jr., F, Arkansas-Monticello (Helped UAM improve to 5-4 in GAC play; averaged 18.0 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 5.0 APG)
  • Miranda Grier, Sr., W, Southern Arkansas (Scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds vs Northwestern Oklahoma State)
  • Breanna Harris, Jr., G/F, Ouachita Baptist (Totaled season highs of 20 points and nine rebounds against Southern Nazarene)      
  • Ashleigh Kelman-Poto, Sr., F, East Central (Set a career high with 23 points against No. 15 Arkansas Tech)
  • Kalea King, Fr., G, Northwestern Oklahoma State (Scored 14 points with five rebounds and two steals in win vs SAU)
  • Arielle Saunders, Sr., F, Harding (Extended double-double streak to five; averaged 16.0 PPG, 11.0 RPG and 2.5 BPG)
