GAC SOFTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (3/10/15)

 RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Great American Conference announced the league’s Players of the Week for the sixth week of the 2015 softball season. East Central’s Jordynn VanPelt slugged her way to the Player of the Week honor while Southern Nazarene’s Kayla Wyatt picked up her second Pitcher of the Week award.
 
GAC SOFTBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Jordynn VanPelt, East Central, UTL, Jr., Snyder, Oklahoma
VanPelt led the Tiger offense to a four-game sweep of Harding. In the series, she hit .571 with three home runs, a double a triple and a stolen base. She scored six times and drove in seven. In game three, she led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a game-winning home run. She ranks third in the conference with six home runs and ninth with 17 RBI.
 
GAC SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Kayla Wyatt, Southern Nazarene, RHP, Jr., Purcell, Oklahoma
Wyatt became the first GAC pitcher to win multiple Pitcher of the Week honors this season as she struck out an incredible 29 in only 14.1 innings pitched against Northwestern Oklahoma State. She opened with a one-hit shutout and 14 strikeouts. She leads all of the NCAA Division II in strikeouts per seven innings among pitchers with at least 10 appearances.
 
NOTABLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
  • Ashton Atwell, Jr., RF, Southern Arkansas (Hit league-leading home run in series-opening win against Henderson State)
  • Kimmy Hendricks, So., SS/C, Harding (Hit .556 with a .667 on-base percentage vs East Central, stole four bases in four tries)
  • McKenzie Rice, So., 2B, Arkansas-Monticello (Hit .571 in two wins vs OBU; slugged 1.143, scored three runs with three RBI)
  • Whitney Robinson, Sr., UTL, Arkansas Tech (Hit .478 with three home runs, 11 hits, 10 RBI, and two stolen bases in six games)
  • Jessika Sandoval, Sr., 3B, Northwestern Oklahoma State (Hit .357 with three doubles as NWOSU took three of four vs SNU)
  • Haley Strawn, Sr., SS, Southeastern Oklahoma State (Scored nine runs and drove in seven runs vs No. 12 Arkansas Tech)
 
NOTABLE PITCHER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
  • McKenzie Ashby, So., RHP, Arkansas-Monticello (Threw complete game vs OBU in finale; UAM improved to 6-0 in GAC play)
  • Jami Godwin, Fr., RHP, Southern Arkansas (Earned a 7-2 win against Henderson State in series opener)
  • Lacey Paulk, Jr., RHP, East Central (Picked up two wins, including her first shutout of the season in series against Harding)
