2016 GAC TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS OPEN WITH COMBINED EVENTS

SHAWNEE, Okla. - On the opening day of 2016 Great American Conference Men's and Women's Track & Field Championships from Oklahoma Baptist's Eddie Hurt, Jr. Memorial Stadium, Harding's Sarah Coleman and David Pencarinha grabbed the leads in the heptathlon and decathlon, respectively.

Coleman earned the top point totals amongst the eight competitors in the high jump and the 200-meter dash to help her build a 112-point with three events - the long jump, javelin and 800-meter run - remaining. Oklahoma Baptist's earn the most points in the 100-meter hurdles and finished Wednesday in second. Southern Arkansas' Bethany Billings picked up the top points total in the shot put.

Pencarinha turned in the fastest time in the 100, the longest mark in the long jump and the top throw in the shot put to separate himself from his nearest competition by 355 points. Oklahoma Baptist's Andrew Worley ended the opening day in second place, followed by Southern Arkansas' Tyler Shelton.

Thursday's action begins at noon with the conclusion of the combined events. Two field events, the javelin and the hammer, start at 4 p.m, with two running events, the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 10,000-meter run, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
