UAM RETURNS TO GAC BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE GAME

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team took down number four seed Henderson State in the GAC Championship Tournament Final Four round, by a score of 11-2, and advanced to the GAC title game.
Arkansas-Monticello (31-19) jumped onto the board first in the bottom half of the opening inning of play against the Reddies of Henderson State (31-20), after a Sean Wagner ground out saw one run cross the plate.
The Weevils opened up the scoring line in the bottom of the fourth starting with an Andres Rios RBI double to left center. Alex Smith and Brian Ray each provided RBI hits as well to push the UAM lead out to 6-0 over the Reddies.
Guy Halbert once again showed off is power at the plate with a two-run home run to left field in the fifth inning. UAM added two additional runs in the sixth inning as well to lead Henderson State 10-0 overall.
HSU tallied two runs in the top of the seventh, but the UAM tacked on one more run of its own in the bottom half of the inning, and ultimately took the game 11-2, and advanced to the GAC Championship game for the second straight season.
Ray finished the match-up going 5-for-5 overall with two runs batted in, and one run scored. Brian is also just the third player in GAC Tournament history to record a five hit game with the last coming from Arkansas Tech in 2014.
Braden Chambers (W, 9-3) started on the hill for the Weevils throwing 8.0 total innings, allowing just two earned runs, and struck out six batters.
Michael Harrison came on in relief to pitch the final inning and close out the game for UAM as he struck out three of the five batters he faced.
The Weevils will return to action tomorrow in the GAC Championship game and will face Henderson State game, at Clyde Berry Field with first pitch set for noon.
