ARKANSAS TECH SPLITS DH WITH #25 MISSOURI WESTERN

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. — Senior Scott Sammons hit two doubles and drove in four runs while junior Cole Fergus and senior Cesar Abreu both added three hits as the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys (4-4) earned a split against the No. 25 Missouri Western Griffons (1-1) Sunday afternoon, winning the opener 6-5 and falling 5-3 in the nightcap.
In the first game, the Wonder Boys got on the board in the bottom of the third as Abreu scored on an error. The Wonder Boys added two runs in the fifth on a two-run double by Sammons, pushing the lead to 3-0.
The Griffons fought back in the sixth and seventh inning scoring four runs to take a 4-3 lead.
The Wonder Boys were down 5-4 going into the bottom of the ninth. After Jonathan Finnegan drew a walk, pinch runner Trennis Grant advanced two bases to third on a wild pitch. An RBI single by Zac Johnson tied the game, and after loading the bases with two out, Abreu was hit by a pitch to drive home the winning run.
Colt Burns picked up the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work. Sammons had two RBIs, while Abreu scored two of the Wonder Boys' runs.
The Wonder Boys will conclude their four-game series with Missouri Western with a noon doubleheader on Monday, Feb. 11, at Tech Field.
