GAC BASEBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK (2/10/15)

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The Great American Conference announced the league’s Players of the Week for the second week of the 2015 baseball season. Henderson State’s Claude Johnson earned the Player of the Week accolade and Arkansas Tech’s Cody Jones claimed the Pitcher of the Week award.
 
GAC BASEBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Claude Johnson, Henderson State, 3B, Gr., Pine Bluff, Arkansas
Johnson powered the Reddies to an impressive 4-0 weekend at the Houston Winter Invitational. He hit .476 with two home runs, four doubles, seven runs scored and eight RBI in games against No. 17 Arkansas Tech, No. 20 Central Missouri, (RV) Tarleton State and Winona State. He registered three three-hit games and came within one hit of the cycle three times.
 
GAC BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK – Cody Jones, Arkansas Tech, LHP, Jr., Russellville, Arkansas
In his second start with the Wonder Boys, Jones threw 7.0 scoreless innings in helping Arkansas Tech defeat No. 20 Central Missouri, 2-0, at the Houston Winter Invitational. He limited the Mules to only four hits and three walks in his start. He struck out four in improving to 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA.
 
NOTABLE PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
  • Bryan Heyward, Sr., OF, Arkansas Tech (Drove in eight at Houston Winter Invitational; drove in winning run vs Tarleton State)
  • Jeff Martin, Sr., 1B, Northwestern Oklahoma State (The reigning Player of the Week hit .529 with five RBI and four runs)
  • Jon Phillips, Sr., 3B, Southern Arkansas (Of his nine hits, collected six doubles, a triple and a home run; slugged .950)
  • Jacob Soisson, Sr., INF, Southeastern Oklahoma State (Stole three bases and hit .600 in doubleheader sweep of Cameron)
  • Nick Spini, Sr., INF, East Central (Collected three doubles in hitting .400 in four games at the Dallas Christian Tournament)
  • Gaige Webster, Jr., OF, Southern Nazarene (Totaled five hits, six walks in 17 plate appearances in SNU’s opening four games)
  • Corey Wood, Jr., RF, Arkansas-Monticello (Hit .462 with three triples, which equaled the 2014 team total, at QuikTrip Classic)

NOTABLE PITCHER OF THE WEEK NOMINEES
  • Jon Chidester, Jr., RHP, Southwestern Oklahoma State (Held No. 21 Texas A&M-Kingsville to one run on four hits in 7.0 IP)
  • Oscar Gomez, Sr., RHP, East Central (Registered nine strikeouts over 7.0 innings of shutout work against Hannibal-LaGrange)
  • Preston Gray, Sr., RHP, Southern Arkansas (Earned a 10.0-inning complete game victory against No. 39 West Texas A&M)
  • Chris Hunt, So., RHP, Henderson State (Tossed 6.0 no-hit innings vs No. 17/21 Arkansas Tech; faced three over the minimum)
  • John Franklin Matros, Fr., RHP, Ouachita Baptist (Struck out 10 and walked none to beat No. 21 Texas A&M-Kingsville)
  • Zach McKnight, Jr., RHP, Arkansas-Monticello (Allowed one run on three over 7.0 innings and beat No. 39 West Texas A&M)
  • Evan Sanders, Jr., LHP, Southeastern Oklahoma State (Totaled nine strikeouts over 5.0 innings of work in defeating Cameron)
  • Zac Stewart, Jr., RHP, Harding (Earned two wins in relief; threw 3.0 hitless IP; Went 3-for-10 at the plate vs Missouri Western)
