SIOUX FALLS, S.D./WARRENSBURG, Mo. - Softball for 2015 in the Great American Conference ended Sunday when Henderson State and East Central fell in the NCAA Division II Central Region Finals. ECU lost to top seed Augustana (S.D.) and No. 2 Central Missou beat HSU.
Augustana (S.D.) 4, East Central 1
East Central saw its historic season come to an end with a 1-4 loss to No. 9 Augustana College.
The Tigers (34-16) saw their lone run come from junior Jordynn VanPelt, who hit her 15th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Senior Samantha McGraw finished her strong tournament with two hits for the day.
Junior Marissa Shaffer threw a complete game for ECU, allowing five hits and four runs, while striking out two. She finished the season with a 15-8 record in the circle.
Central Missouri 2, Henderson State 0
Henderson State's historic season came to an end Sunday as the Reddies lost to No. 20 Central Missouri 2-0 in the NCAA Central II Region Finals.
Central Missouri, 47-14 on the year, got a two-run home run from Alex Leonhart in the bottom of the sixth inning to propel the Jennies to next week's Super Regional against Augustana.
Henderson State managed three hits in the game and had an opportunity in the seventh inning as Sarah Gipson led off the frame with a double.
After Ashlyn White followed Gipson with a walk, UCM pitcher Katie Shockley retired the next three batters to record the win and improve to 25-6 on the season.
Michelle Sorensen pitched the entire game for the Reddies, surrendered five hits, and struck out four batters, and was tabbed with the loss.
