SEARCY, Ark. – Before Friday, Harding had played eight conference tournament games and never scored more than two goals. The Bisons had that by halftime in the Great American Conference Tournament semifinals and added four more in the second half in a 6-1 victory over Oklahoma Baptist at rain-soaked Stevens Field.
Harding (10-5-1), the tournament's top seed, advanced to meet No. 3 seed Ouachita Baptist in a rematch of last year's final, won 3-1 by Ouachita. The final will be Sunday at 1 p.m. at Harding's Stevens Field. Ouachita won the first semifinal of the day 4-2 on penalty kicks over Southern Nazarene after the teams played two scoreless halves and two scoreless overtime periods.
First-team All-GAC freshman Jack Savage led Harding's attack Friday. Savage scored Harding's first and third goals and added assists on two goals that came 51 seconds apart in the second half.
Savage's ninth-minute goal, his fifth of the season, and Bryant Young's second of the season, coming in the 29th minute gave Harding a 2-0 halftime lead. Young's goal was the game-winner, his first this season.
The goals came quickly in the second half. Savage added his second of the game and sixth of the season in the 49th minute.
Oklahoma Baptist (4-15-0) answered with its lone goal just over a minute later. Alec Young scored his first goal on an assist from Dave Brown.
Harding put the game away with Justin Kucera's first career goal at 54:05, followed less than a minute later by Christian Ramos's sixth. Savage assisted on both. His six points were the most ever by a Harding player in a conference tournament game. Ramos also had two assists.
Cooper Mosley scored Harding's final goal on a penalty kick in the 76th minute.
Harding's goal total marked the 11th time in program history the Bisons scored six or more goals at home and was the first six-goal home game against a Division II opponent since its 6-1 win over Ouachita Baptist in 2006.
