SHAWNEE, Okla. – Oklahoma Baptist opened the 2019 Great American Conference Men’s Track & Field Championships by tallying a pair of individual titles to lead after Friday’s events from its home venue, the Eddie Hurt Jr. Memorial Track.

East Central capped Friday in second place thanks to success in the distance events. Eliud Koech and Jakaveon Shaw took first and second in the 10,000-meter run. Koech edged Shaw by four seconds. Larry Filer added a win in the steeplechase. He beat the closest competitor, Oklahoma Baptist’s Nathan Crowson, by greater than 12 seconds.
Harding’s Will Clark won the javelin for the second-straight year. His throw of 53.15m topped the competition by 2.1 meters.
The Muleriders, the 2018 GAC Champions, tailed 27 points to sit in third. SAU’s Richard Barkhimer finished second in the javelin and Gerald Pitts took second in the hammer throw. Harding, Oklahoma Christian and Rogers State rounded out the team standings.
The GAC Championships conclude on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. with six field events – the long jump, high jump, discus, shot put, pole vault and triple jump – and 10 running events – the 400-meter relay, 1500, 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles, 400, 100, 800, 400-meter hurdles, 200, 5000 and 1600-meter relay.
