BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – Top-seeded Southeastern Oklahoma State advanced to the title game of the Great American Conference Women’s Basketball championships for the first time in school history thanks to an 87-84 overtime win against Henderson State in Saturday’s first semifinal clash from the Bruin Fieldhouse.
The trio of Kamryn Cantwell, Katie Webb and Briley Moon accounted for 72 of the Savage Storm’s 87 points. Cantwell scored a career-high 30 points, including the go-ahead layup with 50 seconds left. Her previous career high, 29 points, came against the Reddies in their most recent meeting, 10 days ago.
The Savage Storm (21-7) trailed by seven entering the fourth quarter but scored the first seven points to level the game at 64 apiece. The Reddies (20-10) extended the lead by out to six, 77-71, only to see Webb and Moon score eight unanswered over a 2:38 span. A Blu Jones layup with 10 seconds left sent the Reddies to overtime for the second straight day.
The overtime saw the Savage Storm score the first four points followed by five straight from the Reddies. Cantwell’s layup represented the 15th and final lead change of the game.
In the loss, Pink Jones and Hailey Estes each registered double-doubles. The 11 points and 15 rebounds gave Estes her league-leading 14th double-double. Jones flirted with the first triple-double in GAC Championships history as she finished with 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.
Southeastern Oklahoma State will face the winner of Arkansas Tech and Arkansas-Monticello in Sunday’s 3:00 PM title contest. The Savage Storm split against both potential foes. They won by 27 points at Arkansas Tech, but dropped a 70-62 contest in Durant. They beat UAM, 76-65, at home on January 9. The Blossoms earned a 62-44 win on February 22.
