By: Eric Moyer, GAC Communications
RUSSELLVILLE, Ark.– Due to COVID-19 protocols, the Henderson State women’s basketball team will not be able to compete in their quarterfinal matchup of the GAC Championships. In accordance with conference policy, Southern Nazarene will advance to the semifinals on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
The Crimson Storm will either play at Southwestern Oklahoma State or host Ouachita.
The Reddies finish their season with a 7-6 overall record, 7-5 in GAC play.
Statement from Henderson State Director of Athletics Shawn Jones
"I am beyond heartbroken for our women's basketball program, our coaches and our student-athletes," director of athletics Shawn Jones said. "To have such a promising season come to an end like this is gut-wrenching. Our women's team battled through the protocols of the season, won six of its last seven games and fought to earn a bye in the conference tournament. They deserved the opportunity to play for a GAC title. I cannot begin to express how proud I am of coach Thomas and our team for the way they have responded to adversity this season. Although this hurts, and will continue to for some time, we are all incredibly excited to see this young and promising team back on the court next season."
Statement from Henderson State Women's Basketball Head Coach Jill Thomas
"This is a devastating end to what has been an incredibly special season for our team," head coach Jill Thomas said. "After all the ups and downs we faced, this team had persevered and was playing its best basketball of the season entering the GAC Tournament. To not have our season end on the court is crushing, but it takes nothing away from how much this team means to me and our staff. They have represented themselves and this school in a manner they should be deeply proud of. I love this team and am heartbroken for them. This hurts, but we will be back."
