ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – Henderson State pounded out 17 hits in a 16-1 win against Oklahoma Baptist in Monday's second Great American Conference Baseball Championship semifinal contest from Clyde Berry Field.
The Reddies (25-17) established the largest margin in victory in GAC Championship history. They broke the record set by Arkansas-Monticello in its 19-5 win against Harding on May 6, 2016. Of their 17 hits, 13 resulted in singles. Six players recorded multiple hits led by three apiece from Danny Mitchell, Jr. and Greyson Stevens.
Mitchell and Stevens combined with the bottom three of the Reddies lineup – Bryson Haskins, Josh Aguilar and Nick Butler –to go 12-for-24 with all 16 RBI. Mitchell, Jr. drove in five runs and Butler added four RBI. Haskins scored three times.
Matthew Baker and Cade Tucker combined to limit the Bison (26-15), the GAC's leaders in home runs, runs scored and slugging percentage to just a single run – a solo home run by Eric Carlson – and six hits. They combined for 10 strikeouts against only two walks.
The Reddies advance to Tuesday's final, slated for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch. They will face top-seeded Arkansas Tech. As a No. 7 seed, the Reddies match the lowest-seeded team to make the final of any men's GAC Championship in league history.
The Wonder Boys swept the GAC conference series and won four of five overall during the regular season. Henderson State has reached the final three times before, consecutively from 2015-17, but has never claimed the title. Arkansas Tech has never played in the title game prior to this season.
Oklahoma Baptist entered the week amongst the 10 schools in the under consideration for selection to the NCAA Regional. They await the NCAA Selection Show, set for 9 p.m. on Sunday.
