MAGNOLIA, Ark. – Damon Burroughs paced a foursome of players with multi-hit outings as No. 8 seed Southeastern knocked off top seeded No. 18 Southern Arkansas 5-3 in the opener of their Great American Conference Championship First Round Best of Three Series on Friday night in Magnolia, Ark.
The teams will square off again at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon, with an if necessary game to follow, with the Savage Storm needing a win to advance to the GAC Tournament Final Four on May 11-13 in Springdale, Ark., at Arvest Park.
Burroughs would collect a pair of hits and drive in three runs to lead the SE offense. His triple would be even more significant as it was his 10th of the season, setting a new Southeastern single season record for triples, passing the mark set by Cody Pearce in 2008.
Sam Creed, Joseph Ramirez, and Dylan Herd each added a pair of hits, while Jake Miller and Matt Miles had one each.
Burroughs three RBI would lead the way while Herd would pick up one.
Cole Canuteson got the start and recorded his sixth win of the season after going 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits with three strikeouts.
Cameron Hauch would hold the lead through two innings of work, allowing a run on three hits with four strikeouts.
Jordan Compton would record his fifth save of the season after tossing two innings and allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.
